Why convert HEIC to AVIF?
HEIC is what your iPhone captures photos in. It's efficient, but outside of Apple's ecosystem it's a pain — Windows, Android, older browsers, and most CMS platforms don't handle it natively. AVIF is the modern web's answer: even smaller file sizes, better quality preservation, and wide browser support in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
When to use AVIF over other formats
AVIF is your best option for web delivery in 2026. Compared to JPEG, you'll typically see 40-60% smaller files at equivalent quality. Compared to WebP, AVIF still edges ahead in most real-world tests, particularly for photographic content. Use it for hero images, product photography, galleries, and anywhere page weight matters.
A note on quality settings
AVIF is remarkably forgiving. Quality 70 will look indistinguishable from the original to most viewers while cutting file size dramatically. For hero images where every pixel counts, 80 is a safe ceiling. Going above 85 rarely produces visible gains and eats file size benefits.
